Alan Smith, MD, FAAP

Dr. Smith is originally from Bardstown but when he was 10 years old he and his parents moved to Rhodesia, Africa. Dr. Smith’s father, Dr. Jerry Smith became a medical missionary after leaving his dental practice in Bardstown.

While in Africa, Dr. Smith attended the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Dr. Smith returned to Louisville, KY at the age of 21 to attend the University of Louisville medical school, where he also completed his residency and became a board certified pediatrician.

After medical school, Dr. Smith practiced pediatric medicine in Shelbyville for 8 years until joining Physicians to Children in 1990. He has been medical director for the Nelson County EMS since 1991 and was instrumental in initiating Advanced Life Support in Nelson County. 

Dr. Smith and his wife Karen have lived in Bardstown since 1990 and have 4 children, Amie, Brent, Ryan, and Lauren. Brent and Ryan still live in the community. 

When he is not working at the office, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time in the great outdoors. He is an avid fisherman and enjoys hunting water fowl.
